Black Cohosh (Actaea racemosa) has been used historically for various gynecological conditions for at least the last 500 years in North America and Europe. Also known as Cimicifuga racemosa, it is a perennial dicot of the Buttercup family native to the Eastern half North America. The roots and rhizomes are the parts of the plant used mostly for medicinal purposes. It is most well known for treating menopausal symptoms but also has been used for the following; endometritis, amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, menorrhagia, sterility, spontaneous abortion prevention, post childbirth uterine subinvolution, severe after-birth pains, and to increase breast milk production.*
